Heating & Cooling
Safe Air crews work in Austin and across the surrounding communities, from our base in Houston. The Austin area asks something different from an HVAC system than the Gulf Coast does. Summer heat here is long and punishing, with stretches of 100-degree days that keep a system near full capacity for hours. Then winter brings cedar pollen, and a cold front can drop temperatures sharply in a few hours, which puts heat pumps and furnaces to work. Housing varies as much as the land does. Hyde Park and Travis Heights have older homes where central air often came later and ducts were fitted in wherever they would go. Mid-century Allandale houses may be on their second or third system. Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, Leander, Kyle and Buda added thousands of homes in recent decades, and many of the original systems from those building booms are now reaching replacement age.
Austin's Camp Mabry station averaged about 29 days a year at 100 degrees or hotter from 1991 to 2020, and hot years go far beyond that, with 90 days in 2011 and 80 in 2023. Mountain cedar then follows in winter, usually releasing pollen from about December into February. That leaves a short off season, so filters and equipment here stay busy for most of the year.
